Welk AI-ethiekkader werkt echt? Een praktische vergelijking Which AI Ethics Framework Actually Works? A Practical Comparison
Most comparisons of ethical frameworks end in a shrug: they all have merits, choose what suits you. That is intellectually honest and practically useless to someone who has to approve or reject an AI system on Thursday. So this comparison uses one demanding standard instead of a survey of virtues. Which framework actually helps a real organisation make a defensible decision, before go-live, with the people it has? On that test the field separates quickly, and one framework pulls ahead for reasons worth walking through.
The standard: usable before go-live
De maatstaf: bruikbaar vóór livegang
A framework can be profound and still fail the only test that matters in an organisation: can an ordinary team apply it to a real system, before launch, and reach a decision they can defend afterwards? Depth is not the variable that decides this. Translatability is. A brilliant principle that no one can operate protects fewer people than a rougher one that gets used every time.
PwC's 2023 AI Governance Survey found 71 percent of organisations have a published AI policy while only 34 percent of employees can describe what it says about their role. That gap is the graveyard of unusable frameworks. Whatever we compare, this is the failure to beat.
The five, scored honestly
De vijf, eerlijk gescoord
Each framework in this series brings a real strength and a real limit. Set side by side against the usability standard, they sort like this.
| Framework | Real strength | Real limit | Usable before go-live? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utilitarian | Measures aggregate impact; ideal for scarce-resource allocation. | Blind to how harm is distributed; averages away the vulnerable. | Partly. Easy to compute, easy to misuse alone. |
| Deontological | Draws hard limits that protect rights absolutely. | Goes quiet when duties conflict or two options are both permitted. | Partly. Good at forbidding, weak at choosing. |
| Virtue ethics | Reveals what AI use does to an organisation over time. | Offers no verdict on a single decision. | Rarely. Profound, but not a go-live gate. |
| Justice / Rawls | Forces attention to the worst-off group. | No clean rule when disadvantage is everywhere. | Partly. A powerful diagnostic, not a full process. |
| Magnifica Humanitas | Three questions that fold in benefit, harm-distribution, and accountability. | Rooted in a tradition not everyone shares. | Yes. Answerable by non-specialists in a meeting. |
| Kader | Echte kracht | Echte beperking | Bruikbaar vóór livegang? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deels. Makkelijk te berekenen, makkelijk alleen te misbruiken. |
| Deontologisch | Trekt harde grenzen die rechten absoluut beschermen. | Valt stil wanneer plichten botsen of twee opties beide toegestaan zijn. | Deels. Goed in verbieden, zwak in kiezen. |
| Ja. Beantwoordbaar door niet-specialisten in een vergadering. |
The pattern in the last column is the finding. Four of the five frameworks are indispensable as lenses and incomplete as processes. Each illuminates something the others miss, and none, on its own, walks a team from a proposed system to a defensible yes or no.
Why Magnifica Humanitas comes out ahead, and where it still needs the others
The reason one framework pulls ahead is not that it is deeper than Kant or more rigorous than Rawls. It is not. It wins on translation. Its three questions, who benefits, who bears the hidden costs, who decides the boundary, quietly carry the payload of the others. The benefit question is utilitarian analysis made concrete. The harm-distribution question is Rawls, aimed at the worst-off. The boundary question is deontology and accountability fused. What philosophers spent centuries separating, this framework recombines into something a project lead can answer on a Thursday.
Be fair about the cost of that verdict. Magnifica Humanitas is rooted in a religious tradition, and an organisation that rejects the foundation is entitled to ask why it should adopt the frame. The honest answer is that the three questions survive the removal of the theology. You can hold them as secular governance questions and lose almost nothing operational. What you keep is the one thing the other frameworks struggle to deliver: a process a non-specialist actually runs.
So the recommendation is not winner takes all. Run Magnifica Humanitas as the gate every AI system passes through, because it forces a decision. Keep the others as the lenses you reach for when a question gets hard: utilitarian maths when you allocate, Rawls when the worst-off number looks wrong, virtue ethics when you wonder what a tool is doing to your people over years. The best framework is the one that gets used. On that measure, the field has a leader.
