Most AI projects fail before the technology is even selected. The wrong problem was chosen. The data was not ready. The wrong problem was chosen, the data was not ready, or the organisation was not prepared for the change. These seven questions, asked before any project begins, sharply increase the probability of success.
Question 1–3: The problem definition
Vraag 1–3: De probleemdefinitie
| Question | Why It Matters |
| 1. What specific problem are we solving? | Not 'improve efficiency' but 'reduce invoice processing time from 12 minutes to 3 minutes per invoice'. Vague problems produce vague results. |
| 2. How are we solving it today? | Document the current process in detail. If you cannot describe it precisely, you cannot automate it. Many organisations discover that documenting the process solves half the problem. |
| 3. What does success look like in numbers? | Define the measurable outcome before selecting the technology. Time saved, errors reduced, cost per transaction – pick the metric that matters most. |
| Vraag | Waarom het ertoe doet |
| 3. Hoe ziet succes eruit in cijfers?
Gartner (2023): Two thirds of AI business cases fail internal approval. The primary reason: inability to link projected benefits to specific measurable outcomes.
Question 4–5: The data reality
Vraag 4–5: De datarealiteit
| Question | Why It Matters |
| 4. Is the data available, clean, and accessible? | AI without data is theory. Check whether the data you need actually exists, whether it is structured reliably, and whether you can access it without a six-month IT project. |
| 5. Who owns the data and can we use it? | Data ownership, privacy regulations, and consent requirements often eliminate use cases that seemed viable on paper. Check this early. |
| Vraag | Waarom het ertoe doet |
| 4. Is de data beschikbaar, schoon en toegankelijk? | AI zonder data is theorie.
Question 6–7: The organisation
Vraag 6–7: De organisatie
| Question | Why It Matters |
| 6. Does the team have the skills to work with AI output? | AI produces output that requires human judgment. If the team cannot evaluate, correct, and improve AI output, the tool becomes a liability rather than an asset. |
| 7. Is there a named person accountable for the outcome? | AI projects without a single accountable owner fail at 3× the rate of those with clear ownership. Assign the owner before the project starts. |
| Vraag | Waarom het ertoe doet |
If you can answer all seven questions clearly, your AI project has a strong foundation. If two or more answers are unclear, invest in preparation before investing in technology. The preparation is not a delay, it is the most important phase of the project.
