Snelheid versus zorgvuldigheid: AI uitbrengen voordat u zeker bent Speed Versus Diligence: Shipping AI Before You Are Sure

Move fast and break things is a fine motto until the thing you break is a person. The instinct to ship early, learn from real use, and fix as you go built much of the modern software industry, and it is genuinely good advice for a photo-sharing app. Applied to a model that decides who gets a loan, a job, or a benefit, the same instinct is a plan to harm people first and learn from it afterwards. The dilemma is that the pressure to move fast does not lessen just because the stakes rose.

The startup instinct meets a person

Het startup-instinct ontmoet een persoon

The ship-early philosophy is not foolish. It rests on a real insight: you learn more from a system in real use than from any amount of testing in a lab, and delaying to reach certainty often means delaying forever. For low-stakes software this is simply correct. The cost of a bug in a photo filter is a mild annoyance, quickly fixed, and the fastest path to a good product is to let real users find the problems.

The philosophy breaks on a single fact: when the system decides about people, the bugs are not annoyances, they are harms, and the people who find them are the ones who get hurt. A false fraud flag is not a crash report. It is a family whose benefits stopped. The learn-from-failure model works by distributing the cost of failure onto users, and that is acceptable only when the cost is small. When it is someone's livelihood, distributing it onto them is not a development method. It is a decision to harm.

Match the caution to the cost of being wrong

The way through is not to abandon speed. It is to stop applying one release philosophy to everything and let the cost of being wrong set the pace. The question is simple: if this system is wrong about someone on day one, what happens to them? If the answer is a small, reversible inconvenience, ship it and learn in the open. If the answer is serious harm they cannot easily undo, the diligence is not bureaucracy. It is the minimum owed to the person before you point a half-tested model at their life.

IBM's 2023 Cost of a Data Breach report found incidents contained in under 200 days cost 1.1 million dollars less on average. The pattern holds for rushed AI: the speed saved before launch is repaid, with interest, in the cost of cleaning up what a careful test would have caught.

So the honest reframing is that speed and diligence are not opposites to balance evenly. They are tools to apply where each fits. Be genuinely fast on the low-risk majority, which frees the time to be genuinely careful on the few decisions that can hurt someone. An organisation that is slow on everything is timid, and one that is fast on everything is dangerous. The skill is knowing, before launch, which kind of decision you are shipping.

Ship fast where you can, slow where you must
