De verborgen productiviteitswinst: AI in interne processen waar niemand over praat The Hidden Productivity Gains: AI in Internal Processes Nobody Talks About

Weinig glamoureus werk. Ook waar het geld zit.

The AI applications that get demoed are the ones facing the customer. The chatbot on the website. The slick sales assistant. Meanwhile, the gains that actually move the operating margin are happening somewhere nobody points a camera: the finance close, the procurement queue, the internal knowledge search that used to eat an hour a day. Unglamorous work. Also where the money is.

The demo bias

De demo-bias

There is a reason customer-facing AI gets all the attention. It demos well. A chatbot answering a question on stage looks like the future. A finance analyst reconciling ledgers 20 minutes faster does not. So the budget flows toward the thing that photographs well, and the thing that actually pays is quietly underfunded.

Deloitte's 2023 State of AI report found organisations deploying AI in internal operations report 3.5 times higher ROI than those limiting AI to customer-facing applications. The gap is not small. It is the difference between a rounding error and a strategy.

Why the gap? Internal processes have three qualities that AI feeds on: they repeat, they carry volume, and their cost is already tracked. You do not have to guess whether the finance close got faster. You can read it off the calendar.

There is a second cost to the demo bias, and it is cultural. When the only AI anyone sees is the customer-facing showcase, employees conclude AI is a marketing project. Something for the front of the house. The finance team, the planners, the people drowning in repetitive work, none of them raise their hand, because nobody told them the technology was for them too. The showcase misallocates budget, and worse, it misallocates imagination.

Notice that legal and compliance sits at the top. That surprises people, because it is the function most associated with caution. But review work is pattern work, and pattern work is exactly what AI accelerates when a human keeps the final say. The caution stays. The grind shrinks.

Starting where it counts

Beginnen waar het telt

The mistake is to start with the most visible process. Start instead with the most repetitive one where the cost is already measured. Copenhagen Municipality did exactly this, building 80 RPA automations across 14 departments, maintained by trained civil servants with no software background. No flashy demo. Just 80 quiet processes that no longer need a human to shepherd them.

VNG reported in 2024 that municipalities piloting AI and RPA in administrative processes absorb 25 to 35 percent of the workload on targeted tasks, with no staff reductions. The gain shows up as capacity, not as headcount cuts.

Capacity is the honest word for it. In a Dutch labour market with more than 10,000 unfilled municipal vacancies at the end of 2024, absorbing a third of the administrative load is not a cost-cutting story. It is a survival story.

One warning before you go hunting. Do not automate a broken process. MIT Sloan found 68 percent of municipal process improvement potential sits in workflow redesign and exception standardisation, not in new technology. If the process is a mess, AI will run the mess faster. Fix the flow first. Then automate what remains.
